I have now had my Roomba for 2 weeks and so far I am very excited! It is very easy to set up and use. My only problem was on the first day: when I started it, it wedged itself stuck under a radiator. This problem is solved by setting up the lighthouses that come in the box. These lighthouses enables you to confine the Roomba to certain areas and also guides it around several rooms.
I went for a model that can be programmed (very easy to do as well) and I think it was worth the extra cost. Initially the whole family loved watching it but after a while the novelty wears off and then it is great to be able to programme it to start when we are all off to work and school. So it does the living room at 9 o'clock on weekdays when the house is empty. In the evenings I set it to work in the bedrooms and bathrooms. In the weekend I have programmed it to start at 6 in the morning so the house is clean when we get up.
We have young kids and between hooverings we were used to have crumbs lying about. Not anymore. The house is hoovered every day with no effort and it is generally neater everywhere. I have not had my old hoover out yet although I will need to now - to do the stairs and under a few rugs.
The Roomba has quite a small dust compartment so it needs to be emptied everyday but that is easy to do. I'm pleasantly surprised at how powerfull it is although it doenst have a huge motor. My estimate is that now and then you will need to bring out the ordinary hoover.
Still it is a new and easier way of life and I would recommend it to anyone with young kids or for older people.
I absolutely love mine - we even gave it a nickname!

We were unsure about buying a roomba, would it really vacuum as well as a human, would there be fluff left in odd places and corners, would the dog get vacuumed up, would it work for more than five minutes before breaking down or needing recharging? We own the fluffiest dog the world has ever seen and I was seriously fed up, vacuuming twice or three times a day to keep the fluff at bay when we decided irobot's range was worth investigating. We've had the pleasure of owning the irobot roomba 581 for about six weeks and it has been a joy. Roomba, it has been christened, came with us on holiday too, to a cottage and kept that fluff and filth free, amazing the holiday company's cleaners when we told them we didn't need their services as our robot was doing all the vacuuming.
The good news: Roomba 581 has not broken down, has worked tirelessly to clean the whole house and manages five rooms on one charge. Our dog is so hirsute and moults continuously, you could suffocate in the fluff strewn about but roomba has kept the floors cleaner than I managed and now all it needs is a few minutes with the remote control daily and a big roomba session each week and the floors look pristine. Once a week i lock roomba in a room and run off guiltily, returning twenty five minutes later to move him to another room, and he has cleaned up well, finding lost and strayed letters, bottles etc underneath beds and pushed them to one side for me, I had no idea there was so much rubbish dropped beneath our beds. I find him easy to clean, it just takes three minutes to clean his brushes and empty his bin. The dog was at first hysterical with fear at the sight of roomba, now she lies in front of him and likes to jump aside when he approaches, daring him to play. But I've often stood in the kitchen with roomba vacuuming at my feet and if I get in his way he just gently nudges me and moves on, so no fears about the dog's tail being sucked up into it's rubbish bin. Roomba also cleans corners well, the only spaces he can't clean are ones narrower then he is, but he's managed all our corners.
I wouldn't be without roomba, and my only fear is he might run off with the food mixer. The roomba is a stunningly clever machine and I can't wait for more robotic helpmates to be invented, a cook, dog washer/groomer and house tidier, bed maker would all receive a greatly appreciative home with me, I hope you heard that irobot?
